Bellport, NY (PRWEB) June 17, 2015

The 1838 Greek Revival estate, Nearthebay, is being offered for sale by Old Purchase Properties in Bellport, NY.

Nearthebay, a Grand Greek Revival House c. 1838 was the home of Birdsall Otis Edy, the author and playwright who joined the Woman’s Suffrage Movement and later became the organizer and national president of the Girl Scouts of America.

The current owners, art consultants Arnie and Elizabeth Lizan, hired Architectural Digest 100 designer Jamie Drake to restore the estate to its former grandeur. The property has been featured in Architectural Digest, Traditional Home, and The New York Times.

Nearthebay sits on 1.54 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds on the highest point of the waterfront Village of Bellport. The three level estate features five en suites, seven working original fireplaces, two original parlors, two clawfoot bathtubs on marble bases, gourmet country kitchen, sunroom leading to a garden patio, wrap around porch, lavish grounds and mature gardens with a gunite lap pool and pool house. The interior retains the original wainscoting.

Nearthebay has been thoughtfully restored with the assistance of renowned designer Jamie Drake of New York, who has worked with clients ranging from Madonna to New York mayor Michael Bloomberg. While traditional architecture is honored, the couple’s love for art takes center stage. The result is a striking blend of historic grandeur and contemporary style.

Drake says of the remodel: Arnie and Elizabeth were immediately seduced by the house. We all were, it has fabulous proportions and a charming sequence of rooms. I wanted to create spaces that had the period ambience and yet were strong enough to accept some oftentimes shockingly contemporary art.”

About an hours drive from Manhattan in the tiny and charming village of Bellport this historic enclave has been part of summer social life since the early 1900’s. Famous residents include Isabella Rossellini, Charlie Rose and Randy SmithJackie Kennedy once summered in Bellport. Round-trip ferry service goes directly from Bellport to an exclusive, private beach on Fire Island all summer long. Sailboats gliding over the water of the Great South Bay, cycling and walking along the tree lined streets, afternoon teas and luncheons, evening soirees and theatrical evenings at the local playhouse set the stage for this once famous artist colony.

The property is listed at $ 3.995 million by Old Purchase Properties. For more information contact Mark Petheram at 631-286-2424 or email info(AT)oldpurchase.com.
